Genpink Mommy Pink Perspective for Gen Y Mommies 15 Feb / 2014 Genius Man Gift for Valentine’s Day After six years of marriage my wonderful husband has wisely figured out that his busy work schedule doesn’t exempt him from giving a nod to ol’ St. Valentine – on time. (He really does have a crazy schedule, and I gotta say I love him for coming through anyway!) On the 13th he brought home some gorgeous flowers and a card. A+ ! And… Oh no. What should I get him?? I went to Sprouts today to get dinner stuff and happened across some kettle BBQ chips. And fancy looking beer. I hope he likes it! Hope you all had a fun Valentine’s Day! ~Jacqueline Posted by Jacqueline M. It all started so innocently – my father had given Leo a gift card to Half Price Books for his birthday, so we ventured out to make use of it. I was thrilled when Leo selected a set of magnets, kind of like this one: “He’s into SCIENCE!”, I thought as I imagined him going to medical school and having a luxurious, satisfying life. Inspired, I asked him if he liked a book about the anatomy of the human body. “Sure!” he said, enthusiastically. We were on a roll…what else would he pick out? THIS. Sigh… Disgusting. Pile. Of convincing rubbery brown poo (lower right). This was one of those times where I decided to put on my Mom Poker Face and just go with it, even though my inner voice was screaming It’s poop! Fake poop! A book explaining bodily functions that we do NOT speak of! A little background on that: My parents raised my brother and me to not speak of poo. It was something to be hidden, quickly flushed, and covered up with massive amounts of Glade spray. (My paternal grandmother grew up in the Victorian culture which influenced my dad’s sense of propriety.) Thank goodness I married someone who is irreverent and casual about it. I’ve errr….loosened up about things. Anyway, back to the weekend. After the book store my hubby read the book with Leo. We all had some good laughs. We took turns holding the gelatinous poo, eyeball, and brain. They are glorious in his five year old eyes. My husband pretended to be asleep on the couch and put the fake poo square on his forehead. Surprise, surprise, Leo had to do it too. Like father, like son. This was one of those times where it was good to be flexible and balanced. To think of all the joking around and fun we all would have missed out on (at least two hours worth), had I whipped out my Mom Veto Card. Plus, it got Leo thinking. He started asking all sorts of questions about the human brain (me: Uh…I don’t know. We’ll Youtube it!). That got my husband thinking about all of the other science videos we could show him, and we did show him videos about the planets. Lastly, my hope is that my son will grow up without hang ups about poop. Now if I can just reach equilibrium and convince him to stop yelling Bye, Grandpoop! to my dad. Or to stop saying poophead around our friend’s two and a half year old (he repeats everything!). If you’re really brave and you wanna give this adventure a try with your kids here’s the book on Amazon. In case you don’t want to make the trip to Half Price Books. Have a balanced day! ~Jacqueline This post contains affiliate links which means I can make money from your purchase. But it doesn’t make the price go up for you. Posted by Jacqueline M. Let’s face it…if I don’t there’s a chance he’ll stamp random stuff all over himself and our walls, like he did here with his buddy! (Thank goodness Crayola is washable.) Post stamping spree. The thing is my attention span is short, and I don’t like feeling like the-not-perfect-craft-mom that I am. So, I scoured Pinterest and voila! – easy Valentine’s Day projects for kids. 7 Crafts to do with Kids for Valentine’s Day 1. Paper hearts on the wall from kidsomania : Cut out some paper hearts and have your kids help color them pink and red and then tape them to the wall in a whimsical layout. It’s fun to tape them in the kitchen breakfast area or in the play room! 2. Valentine’s Countdown from kiddosathome. : Starting Feb 1st, let them wake up to a new heart on their door saying something their parents love about them. 3. Symmetry art: Valentine love hearts tutorial from Nuture Store . “Symmetry art is a classic childhood painting activity and it works so well as a Valentine craft…The hearts…look great glued onto cards, strung as garlands or fasten a pin on the back and you can wear your heart on your sleeve.” 4. Throw a Rockstar Valentine’s Day Class Party from teachmama . Fun class games and activities to sprinkle into the Valentine giving party! 5. Love those Little Feet on Canvas : paint your child’s feet with red or pink craft or acrylic paint and stamp them on a blank canvas. Write “Love” or a custom message below or above the little feet. What a great way to document your little one’s tiny tootsies! I found some great canvases on Amazon for about 2 for $10: 6. Pink Dipped Rice Krispy Hearts from InspiredbyThis : Dipping is on-trend in fashion, so why not bake in style too? You can have your kids help dip or ice the hearts. Use a plastic ziplock bag with a corner cut off to make an impromptu icing decorator, or here’s a simple icing decorating kit: 7. Festive Gifts for the Bookworms in your life from Bookriot : “Just use a heart-shaped hole punch from the craft store, ribbon/pipe cleaners, and paint swatches from your local big box home improvement store.” You can see our whole Pinterest Board here . Or you could always try some (supervised) stamped Valentine’s cards ...
